Quoting what Austrian Ambassador Joseph Mülner said in Korea, he is a “person living among various worlds.” I met Franz Brandner, a Seoulite who “discovered the beauty and mystery of Asian culture” and was perfectly suited to the “Interview Seoulites” with the aim of meeting various people living in Seoul.
It’s nice to have this encounter with the pictures of Mt. Acha in May when the flowers are bright and the light green trees are beautiful. How long have you been in Korea?
Years go by so fast It’s already been 8 years. Born in Steyr, Austria, the son of a farmer. I had been studying painting in my hometown all along, but I fell in love with the charm of Korea, which I accidentally visited, and forgot to go back to my hometown and settled.
The theme of this exhibition is “Dialogue with Nature,” and I am curious about the background of planning such an exhibition based on Korean mountains and fields, especially Acha Mountain.
Nature, as our history says, has always been the source of inspiration for the production of all great artists. An artist must train his eyes to observe nature and understand the richness of nature and whether different objects or nature engage with each other to create various relationships.
Europe is trying to protect its natural environment too much, so it smells artificial. In Korea, places like parks are artificial, but the feeling of nature remains untouched. Korea’s mountains are precious friends who can’t be separated for a moment, making you feel comfortable and inspired.
Behind the house, Mountain is located like a folding screen. He climbs the mountain every day to observe trees, grass, and stones and recreates the harmony created by sunlight and shadows as a work of art.
I especially like Korean pine trees. Looking at pine trees with curved stems and branches, I feel like I’m getting ideas for paintings. It has a different style from the magnificent European pine trees that stretch out large and long.
Specifically, I want to know how you have studied painting, your educational background, and your history.
I studied graphic design at steyr Art College and learned the traditional techniques of various famous paintings in the world’s leading museums while studying at Art School in Stair, Austria. By the age of 20, I became a student of Wolfgang Schuler, a famous Austrian portrait master. In addition, I met Guenter Frohmann, who is well known as a landscape painter, I had the opportunity to learn how to draw pictures that resemble life experiences as well as logical perspective painting techniques, which served as an opportunity to create a frame as a painter.
What do you think is your style of painting?
I can say that I am a post-impressionist. However, paintings should not only be viewed but also reflect the messages delivered by artists with emotions and feelings. I love people and nature. We should not only look at the differences between people and culture but also pursue harmony and integration that enrich our lives! The same principle applies to the birth of a work. We use different shapes and colors as components to make masterpieces. In this way, art will play an important role in mutual understanding and peace among people of different cultures.
I can feel the soft image in the picture. Can you explain the color of your drawing?
I like to paint landscapes containing nature. My characteristic is the vivid brush touch used to capture light and shadow. Buildings and nature blend into one harmony. The shadows of green, blue, and purple contrast with warm tones. It is a technique that impressionist painters usually use to capture a moment in a situation.
How many exhibitions have you had in your eight-year activity?
Since 1989, I have held about 50 individual exhibitions in Austria, Korea, the United States, Germany, and France. Since 2002, I have often traveled to Europe for painting work and exhibitions while settling in Korea. It is also the eighth exhibition here in Korea. In other words, the exhibition has been held once a year on average.

요세프 뮐르너 주한 오스트리아 대사가 한 말을 인용하자면 그는 ‘여러 세계의 사이에서 사는 사람’이다. 일찍이 ‘아시아 문화의 아름다움과 신비로움을 발견’했으며 서울에 사는 다양한 사람을 만나보자는 취지의 ‘인터뷰 서울人’에 더할 나위 없이 잘 어울리는 서울 사람, 프란츠 브란드너 씨를 종로의 한 갤러리에서 만났다.
꽃들이 화사하고 연초록의 나무들이 아름다운 5월, 아차산 그림으로 이런 만남을 갖게 해주어 반갑다. 한국에 온 지는 얼마나 되었나?
세월이 참 빠르다. 벌써 8년이다. 오스트리아의 소도시 슈타이어에서 농부의 아들로 태어나 줄곧 고향에서 그림 공부를 해왔는데, 우연히 방문한 한국의 매력에 빠져 고향으로 돌아가는 걸 잊고, 아예 정착하고 말았다.
이번 전시회 주제가 ‘자연과의 대화’인데, 한국의 산과 들, 특히 아차산을 소재로 이런 전시회를 기획한 배경이 궁금하다.
자연은 우리의 역사가 말하듯이 모든 위대한 예술가들의 작품 제작에 항상 영감을 얻는 근원이 되어왔다. 예술가란 그의 눈이 자연을 관찰하는 데 훈련돼야 하며 그 자연의 풍부함과 서로 다른 사물이나 자연이 서로 맞물려서 다양한 관계를 연출하는지를 이해하여야 한다.
유럽은 지나치게 자연 환경을 보호하려다 보니 인공적인 냄새가 난다.한국도 공원 같은 곳은 인공적이지만 산은 손대지 않은 자연의 느낌이 그대로 남아 있다. 한국의 산은 마음을 편안하게 해주고 영감을 떠오르게 하는, 한시도 떨어질 수 없는 소중한 친구다. 서울 광진구 구의동 집 뒤편으론 아차산이 병풍처럼 자리잡고 있다.
매일 산에 올라 나무와 풀, 돌을 관찰하고 햇살과 그림자가 만들어 내는 조화를 하나의 예술작품으로 재창조해 낸다. 한국의 소나무를 특히 좋아한다. 줄기가 굽고 가지가 휜 소나무를 보고 있노라면 그림에 대한 아이디어가 샘솟는 느낌이다. 커다랗고 길게 뻗은 웅장한 유럽의 소나무들과는 또 다른 멋이 있다.
구체적으로 그림공부를 어떻게 해왔는지, 학력과 이력을 알고 싶다.
슈타이어 아트컬리지에서 그래픽 디자인을 공부했고, 오스트리아 스테이르에 있는 예술학교(Art School)에서 수학하면서 세계 유수한 박물관의 다양한 명화들의 전통적 기법을 배웠다. 20살이 되면서는 오스트리아의 유명한 초상화의 대가 볼프강 슈러(Wolfgang Schuler) 문하생이 되었다. 또한 풍경화가로 잘 알려진 구엔터 프로만(Guenter Frohmann)과 교우하면서 논리적인 원근화 기법뿐 아니라 삶의 경험이 닮긴 그림을 그리는 법을 배우는 기회를 갖게 되어 화가로서의 틀을 만드는 계기가 되었다.
본인의 화풍은 어느 쪽이라고 생각하는지?
후기 인상파라고 말할 수 있다. 그러나 그림은 단순히 보는 것만으로 그치지 않고, 예술가들이 전하는 메시지를 감정과 느낌으로 반영하고 있어야 한다. 나는 사람과 자연을 사랑한다. 우리는 사람과 문화의 차이점만 보지 말고, 우리의 삶을 풍요롭게 하는 하모니와 통합을 추구해야 한다! 작품을 탄생시키는 것 또한 같은 원칙이 적용된다. 우리는 명작을 만들기 위해서 다른 모양과 컬러를 구성요소로서 사용한다. 이렇게 예술은 상호이해와 다른 문화의 사람들 간의 평화를 위해서 중요한 역할을 할 것이다.
부드러운 이미지가 그림에서도 그대로 느껴진다. 본인의 그림에 대한 컬러를 좀 설명해 줄 수 있나?
자연을 담은 풍경을 그리는 것을 좋아한다. 나의 특징은 빛과 그림자를 잡기 위해서 사용하는 생생한 붓 터치다. 건물과 자연은 하나의 하모니로 녹아든다. 녹색, 블루, 퍼플 컬러의 그림자들은 따뜻한 톤과 대비를 이룬다. 보통 인상주의 화가들이 어떤 상황의 한 순간을 그림에 담기 위해 사용하고 있는 기법이다.
8년 동안 작품 활동을 하면서 전시회는 몇 차례나 가졌나?
1989년 이후 오스트리아, 한국, 미국 독일, 프랑스 등에서 50여 회의 개인전을 가졌었다. 2002년 이후 한국에 정착하면서도 그림 작업과 전시 등을 위해 유럽 여행을 자주 하였다. 이곳 한국에서도 여덟 번째 전시회다. 평균 1년에 한 번씩은 전시회를 열어온 셈이다.
