As Austrian Ambassador I would like to extend my best wishes for the success of the exhibition by my fellow compatriot Franz Brandner.
To all of you interested and acquainted with the art scene in Seoul I hardly have to introduce Franz Brandner who has exhibited extensively in Seoul and other cities in Korea having lived here on a permanent basis for quite a number of years already.
The paintings exhibited in the Nowon Art Center are probably best described in the artist’s own words:
“Modern Art qualifies so long it does not renounce previous creative traditions. Art which can endure should be connected and developed based on the past. Creative work is a way of retreating, cutting oneself off from disturbing influences which prevent and limit one from understanding oneself.”
Born in 1962 in Steyr in the province of Upper Austria it does not seem farfetched to assume that the landscapes of his childhood and the people living there not only explain Franz Brandner’s at an already young age displayed predilection to work in the open air surrounded by nature but also contributed to his desire that by depicting the scenic splendor of landscapes to put forward a very personal statement of his that life has value and meaning. Thus his paintings are more than mere depictions of nature they are the manifestation of his outlook to life which for him incorporates a deep commitment to the international peace movement.
Franz Brandner can be regarded as someone who lives between the worlds. Married to a Malaysian with Chinese origin he discovered the beauty and mystery of the Asian culture but at the same time remembering his roots he never abandoned his ties to Austria. This has shown itself among others in an impressive array of exhibitions which he has held over the years in Austria, especially his home province where he keeps up a continuous presence. With his artistic work Franz Brandner furthermore adds an important contribution to the excellent relations exiting between the Republic of Korea and Austria. Further proof of his increasing international reputation is the fact that countries where Brandner exhibitions have been staged include the United States, France, and Japan.
Let me conclude my greeting in the fitting words of the Governor of the Province of Upper Austria, Josef Puehringer who once said about the paintings of Franz Brandner that they give us an intense experience as well as an opportunity to understand the rich dialogue between the artist and the world that surrounds him.
주한 오스트리아 대사로서 저는 제 동포인 프란츠 브란드너의 이번 전시회가 성공을 거두길 바랍니다.
서울의 예술분야에 관심이 많고 잘 알고 있는 여러분에게 저는 이미 수년 전부터 한국에서 살면서 서울을 비롯한 많은 도시에서 여러 전시회를 가지 프란츠 브란드너라는 사람을 특별히 소개할 필요가 없을 것입니다.
노원문화예술회관에 전시된 작품들은 작가의 말로 가장 잘 표현할 수 있습니다:
“이전의 창조적 전통을 버리지 않는 한 현대예술을 우수합니다. 오래 갈 수 있는 예술은 과거와 연계되고 이를 기초로 개발되어야 하는 것입니다. 창조적 작업은 한발 물러서서 자신을 이해하는 것을 방해하고 제한하는 영향력으로부터 자신을 끊어버리는 것입니다.”
1962년 오버외스터라이히 주의 슈타이어라는 지방에서 태어나 그의 유년시절의 풍경과 거기사는 사람들이 프란츠 브란드너에게 이미 어린 나이에 자연 속에서 시작되었던 이 일에 대한 애정을 설명할 뿐만 아니라 생명은 가치와 의미가 있다는 작가의 개인적인 주장을 장관을 이루는 풍경을 그림으로써 전달하려는 자신의 욕구에 기여했다고 주장해도 억지가 아닐 것입니다. 그러나 그의 작품들은 단순히 자연의 묘사가 아닙니다. 그의 작품들은 작가가 인생을 보는 관점을 나타내줍니다. 그에게는 여기에 국제평화운동에 대한 깊은 헌신이 포함되어 있습니다.
프란츠 브란드너는 여러 세계의 사이에서 사는 사람으로 여겨질 수 있습니다. 중국에 뿌리를 둔 말레이시아 여인과 결혼하여 그는 아시아 문화의 아름다움과 신비로움을 발견하는 동시에 자신의 뿌리를 기억하면서 오스트리아와의 끈을 한 번도 놓은 적이 없습니다. 이것은 여러 해에 걸쳐 오스트리아 중에서도 특히 작가의 고향에서 열린 인상적인 일련의 전시회들을 통해 잘 드러납니다. 자신의 예술적 작업을 통해 프란츠 브란드너는 대한민국과 오스트리아 사이에 존재하는 훌륭한 관계에 중요하게 기여하고 있습니다. 점점 커지는 그의 국제적 명성의 또 다른 증거로는 브란드너 전시회가 미국, 프랑스 그리고 일본에서 열린 사실을 들 수 있습니다.
오버외스터라이히 주정부의 지도자인 요세프 퓌링어의 말을 빌어 이 인사말을 마치고자 합니다. 그는 프란츠 브란드너의 작품들이 예술가와 그를 둘러싼 세계 사이의 풍부한 대화에 대한 강렬한 경험과 기회를 제공한다고 했습니다.
